What does the color coding of the symbols in the periodic table mean?

Is it just the groups that the chemicals are in?What does the color coding of the symbols in the periodic table mean?
One color is for alkali metals, another color is for the alkaline earth metals, yet another is for lanthanides, another for actinides, another color for transition metals, one color is for metals, another color for nonmetals, one color is for metalloids, one color is for halogens, and one color is for noble gases.

Yes, some of the colors correspond to the group such as alkali metals, but others are simply for metals or nonmetals.

Yeah, pretty much. They separate the elements so you know which ones are halogens, transition metals, etc.
